microPhantom: Playing microRTS under uncertainty and chaos

This competition paper presents microPhantom, a bot playing microRTS and participating in the 2020 microRTS AI competition. microPhantom is based on our previous bot POAdaptive which won the partially observable track of the 2018 and 2019 microRTS AI competitions. In this paper, we focus on decision-making under uncertainty, by tackling the Unit Production Problem with a method based on a combination of Constraint Programming and decision theory. We show that using our method to decide which units to train improves significantly the win rate against the second-best microRTS bot from the partially observable track. We also show that our method is resilient in chaotic environments, with a very small loss of efficiency only. To allow replicability and to facilitate further research, the source code of microPhantom is available, as well as the Constraint Programming toolkit it uses.


Overly demanding Apple may fudge facial recognition feature a bit to get iPhone X to market by holidays

SAN, FRANCISCO/SEOUL โ€“ As of early fall, it was clearer than ever that production problems meant Apple Inc. wouldn't have enough iPhone Xs in time for the holidays. The challenge was how to make the sophisticated phone -- with advanced features such as facial recognition -- in large enough numbers. As Wall Street analysts and fan blogs watched for signs that the company would stumble, Apple came up with a solution: It quietly told suppliers they could reduce the accuracy of the face-recognition technology to make it easier to manufacture, according to people familiar with the situation. With the iPhone X set to debut on Nov. 3, we're about to find out whether the move has paid off. Some analysts say there may still be too few iPhone Xs to meet initial demand.


Limited Supply? iPhone X Face ID Causing Production Problems

Apple is having production issues with the upcoming iPhone X, which could further limit the number of units available at launch, according to the Wall Street Journal. The problems involve the iPhone X's most important feature: Face ID. The facial recognition technology will allow users to unlock their phone and make payments using just their face. However, two components that make up the Face ID, dubbed Juliet and Romeo, are complicating production of the device. The assembly of Romeo has taken more time than Juliet, leading to an imbalance in supply, meaning there were more Juliets and not enough Romeos, sources told the Journal. The Romeo module includes a dot projector that uses a laser to beam 30,000 infrared dots on the user's face to map their unique traits.


Production problems with Hero5 camera briefly scare GoPro investors

Late-stage production problems with GoPro Inc.'s newest camera briefly caused the company's shares to falter. GoPro's stock dipped from $11.94 at close Thursday to as low as $9.90 Friday before rebounding to $11.15 around 11:30 a.m. "Demand is very strong," said Anthony Bates, GoPro's president. "We just can't catch up to the forecasted demand and that's what you see reflected." The waterproof camera, which costs $399, has voice control and ultra-high definition video quality.
